Ethan Sindall 10/15/10 J. Watts English 101 In today’s society driving plays an important role. It is a well sought out mode of transportation, rite of passage for teenagers, and a basic necessity. Driving is a symbol of freedom for teenagers who pass their driving test and get their license. Driving is also something serious and shouldn’t be taken lightly. In 2008 alone, traffic accidents that caused injury totaled at 32,769 accidents. Aggressive driving can be linked to this because aggressive driving is dangerous and never ends well for anyone. In the 1990’s the term road rage was coined by the media and was linked to the most violent events. In India, a popular skating instructor used his vehicle to repeatedly run over, crush, and kill another man with whom he argued over an incident on the road (India Today, 15 May 2000). Most people would be surprised by the sort of person who commits road rage. They can be your next door neighbor, relative, teacher or boss, who seem like a normally sane person one minute, but fly off the handle the next moment and commit horrible acts of rage. Even police officers are subject to road rage. A Puyallup police officer was charged in what authorities said was a case of road rage. Officer Mark Delight was charged with second-degree assault and reckless driving in connection with an incident involving another driver. The other driver honked his horn at a car that was sitting at a green light and went around him. He saw the other driver, (Officer Delight) give him the finger, but he continued to drive ignoring him.
